Every year, we receive more applicants than we are able to accommodate at YHP. Applicants are primarily evaluated based on their responses to these essay questions. Please answer thoughtfully!

The Hanford Site is a decommissioned nuclear production complex located on the Columbia River near the Tri Cities in central Washington. It was part of the Manhattan Project and produced plutonium for atomic bombs, now recognized as a National Historic Park spanning three states. The site has a long history of indigenous habitation and is especially significant to the Yakama Nation, the Nez Perce, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, and the Wanapum Tribe, each of whom remain involved with the site. With YHP's focus on co-stewardship this year, what are some ways you could imagine Tribal Nations, government agencies, and the regional community sharing the call to present the different layers of history at the site?*

What is a place in your community that embodies different perspectives? How is that space shared both physically and symbolically? What are some best practices or opportunities for improvement for sharing that place and its histories?*

Please tell us about your teaching or professional experience that would make you an ideal Teacher / Mentor to help guide students through the many histories of the Hanford Site and the Tri-Cities communities, past and present.*

Will travel be a potential barrier for attending YHP? If yes, please explain:

Parents/Guardians can check-in their student on Tuesday, July 18 around noon at our Tri-Cities lodging site. Another option we provide is a carpool from Seattle departing that same morning. Pick-up and carpool home is Friday afternoon on July 21. If you need additional travel support, financially or logistically, please let us know here so we can assist as earlier as possible.
