In celebration of spooky season, we are thrilled to welcome magician David Hirata back to the Stimson-Green Mansion!

“Listening in the Dark: Stories of American Spiritualism from 1848-1926,” presented by David Hirata

The table rises though no one is touching it. The servant’s bell rings, but no one is there. The planchette slides across the Ouija board, though your fingers barely touch it.

These are the hallmark spectacles of Spiritualism.

Join us for a night of magic and history as we explore the origins of the Spiritualism movement with David Hirata, professional magician and storyteller. We will delve into the movement’s beginnings in the Victorian world, meet the mediums who gave voice to the ghosts, and discover what happens when a solace for grief becomes mass entertainment. In addition to his speech, David’s magic will bring classic Spiritualism practices such as psychic vibrations and “spirit readings” to life before your very eyes.

Part lecture, part magic show, you’ll leave the evening believing in ghosts—or at the very least, believing in the power of their messages.

About the Speaker

David Hirata is a stage magician and avid amateur historian. A former scientist, he counts himself a “credulous skeptic” in regard to things that go bump in the night.

His theatrical magic work has included presentations of Japanese American history and Victorian parlor entertainment. He is currently the resident magician at White Branches Cabaret in Mt Vernon and Shawn O’Donnell’s restaurant in Everett.

Accessibility Considerations. For those planning to attend events at the Stimson-Green Mansion, we want to note some of the mobility challenges of this venue. As a historic home built in 1901, the Stimson-Green Mansion is ACA compliant but not ADA accessible.

There are stairs at each entrance. At the front door, the primary entrance to the house, there are six steps (with a railing) up to the front porch, followed by an additional step into the house. Once inside, there are three additional steps (with a railing) between the main event area and the bathroom.
