Did You Know?

  • The Heritage Barn Initiative was created in 2007.
  • It was established after advocacy by the Washington Trust and organizations across the preservation and agricultural communities, who campaigned for the preservation and ongoing economic vitality of barns as the built embodiment of our state’s agricultural heritage.
  • In response, the Washington State Legislature passed Substitute House Bill 2115, which led to the creation of the Heritage Barn Initiative within the Washington State Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation (DAHP).
  • The Heritage Barn Initiative includes the Heritage Barn Register and the Heritage Barn Grant Program, which provides matching grants to assist with barn preservation and rehabilitation projects.
  • Today, 851 barns have been added to the Heritage Barn Register, with listings in all 39 counties in Washington, and 156 grants totaling more than $3.63 million in funds have been awarded through the Heritage Barn Grant Program.
  • The Washington Trust administers the Heritage Barn Grant Program under contract with DAHP.
