Essay Question

As place professionals, our work ties together our inherent desires to connect with other humans and to experience sense of place. Through this conference, we want to think more deeply about what that looks like. Below are just a few of the questions on our minds. Please select one to respond to.

We know these are complex questions, and we don’t expect you to have all — or even any — of the answers. Rather, we invite you to lean into some of these big ideas we’ll be discussing at this year’s conference with your own professional experiences, educational knowledge, personal anecdotes, and even questions of your own.

1. How can we empower local makers, tradespeople, and cultural industries to both strengthen our local economies and ensure the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations?
2. How can we continue to expand the reach of our work to foster a greater sense of belonging in the preservation fields, our communities, and our downtowns?
3. Given ongoing challenges our state is facing, what practices can we adopt to ensure the resiliency and livability of our historic neighborhoods?
