Main Street Place Activation

Activating public spaces has been a critical strategy in supporting small businesses and communities throughout the pandemic. Washington Main Street believes that many of the trends that have emerged as emergency responses should have a more permanent place in our downtown districts. Through a two-part training and a grant opportunity, we hope to elevate local Main Street programs’ planning abilities and help you achieve small wins through place activation.

Main Street Communities and Affiliates will be invited to apply for a grant to support your efforts toward a 90-Day Plan to activate a portion of your downtown. WMS will award 2-5 grants that will provide both technical assistance (in-kind value worth over $1,000 each) provided by Samantha Lorenz (Thomas) of Terra Soma and a cash grant (up to $2,000) to provide matching funds for materials costs associated with your project. If awarded, you will assemble a team to work with Samantha between March-June to plan and execute a place activation initiative of your choosing for your downtown district.

Applications are due by February 24, 2021. Download the Place Activation resource guide for more information.
