Port Townsend

July 12-15, 2022

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation held our ninth annual Youth Heritage Project in Port Townsend in partnership with the National Park Service, the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation, and the Washington State Parks Department, with Fort Worden State Historical Park serving as the base for the program. Students had the opportunity to dive into maritime heritage—past and present—and work on storytelling projects related to the new Maritime Washington National Heritage Area. They took to the water in locally hand-made long boats, met with boatbuilders and tradespeople, learned from local Tribal members, and got to play in quirky downtown Port Townsend. For the students’ culminating projects, they worked with local partners to help them better tell the stories of four historic and cultural resources—serving as advisors on real-world problems.
