Hanford Site & Tri-Cities
July 18-21, 2023
The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation held our 10th annual Youth Heritage Project at the Manhattan Project National Historical Park’s Hanford Site and in the Tri-Cities in partnership with the National Park Service, the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation, and the United States Department of Energy. Students had the opportunity to explore the Hanford Site, a decommissioned nuclear production complex originally built as part of the Manhattan Project during World War II, now a national historical park. Students learned about the Tribal nations who have called the Tri-Cities region home since time immemorial, the workers (and associated history of segregation) who helped build the world’s first plutonium production facilities, the complexities and ethical issues surrounding nuclear science and technology, and the modern-day environmental clean-up efforts around the site.
